Local rhythm and blues singer Carl Sims is about as dapper and stylish as they come when he gets on stage. As you see below, our photographers have enjoyed taking his portrait. A velvet-voiced singer who got his music industry start as a teenager with the original Bar-Kays back in the 1960s, he released records in recent years through Memphis-based Ecko Records. Sims has now moved on to CDS Records out of California, he tells us. When he was with the original Bar-Kays, Sims (as the band’s lead singer) opened for Otis Redding. Sims sat down this week to talk with me about winning an award (courtesy of online voting) from the Jus’ Blues Music Foundation earlier this month, as well as the CD he’s recording for his new label. The award kudos came for a romantic number called “One Night,” Sims landing the honor for Best Southern Soul Song of the Year – Male. We plan to publish a feature story about him in Friday’s Gazette right on the Accent page.
