If you have a Facebook page and want to see what’s going on with arts and entertainment coverage at the Gazette, check out our page there. Just do a search for Texarkana Gazette Accent and you should be able to find us there on Facebook. It’s a Facebook page and to stay in touch there just become a fan; you’ll see updates on your Facebook home page.  I’m still going to be updating this page here with news and information on the entertainment scene in Texarkana. We’ll have material in both places for you.

Heads up, Texarkana U2 fans: Sunday should be a sweet day online. U2 announced the Irish lads will be streaming their sold-out Rose Bowl concert live, free, and in-full on the band’s YouTube station. For more information, check out the U2 Website: U2.com. It’s a pretty rare treat to find a big name concert like this placed online for a Webcast. It will kick off at 10:30 p.m. our time. Enjoy!

AFI has launched an online video portal (with its videos hosted at YouTube) to make its archive material accessible to movie buffs all over. It’s a great site featuring everything from red carpet interviews of new stars to clips honoring those who’ve received AFI Life Achievement Awards (such as George Lucas, Michael Douglas, and Tom Hanks) for their many contributions to the movies. To get to it, go to AFI.com’s video section: www.afi.com/video. Particularly interesting to me are some interviews with master directors like Spielberg. Imagine sitting in on a film seminar with him! Or, such as the James Earl Jones clip down below, actors discuss some of their most fascinating roles and flicks. I’ll include a clip of Alfred Hitchcock talking about controlling tension in a film.

Somehow, someway, Texarkana has made it to “America’s Finest News Source,” as they call themselves—otherwise known as “The Onion,” the legendary satirical newspaper. It’s a satirical, fake story about math funding at a “West Texarkana High.” Link to the story: Senior prank somehow leaves high school with increased math funding. So what do you think is being satirized?

Yesterday I sat down at Merfeld’s Bread Co. to talk with Jonathan Elder, a young Texarkana fella who has some infectious energy and real talent with the ukulele. Yes, the ukulele. He combined his happy attitude with his musical chops to fare well (third place) in an international ukulele promotion contest, the 2008 Bushman World Ukulele Video Contest. Here’s the video and a snapshot;he came into the office and gave an impromptu concert from the photo studio. Stay tuned to the Accent page for a story soon.

Texarkana resident Jonathan Elder recently placed third in an international online video contest that promotes ukeleles. Elder's whimsical sense of humor and the ukelele seem to be a natural fit.

Hulu and Hullabaloo

Back in April we featured new online content provider Hulu.com on a Sunday Accent page story. Hulu acts as a window through which to see online TV shows and movies, but the content is available right at the Website. Since it first appeared, Hulu has grown. Here’s an opinion piece from the Hollywood Reporter about the Hulu success story and its limitations so far. I don’t quite buy the argument of the article—or maybe I should say, rather, that the points are fairly obvious. I mean, of course sustained growth for an entertainment provider like this will depend on content planning and landing hits. Nevertheless, it’s an interesting read (and makes some important observations): Hulu commentary.

From the story:

The Associated Press named Hulu its Web site of the year. Mark Cuban declared “Hulu Kicks YouTube’s Ass.” Influential blog TechCrunch issued a mea culpa. And if that guy Barack Obama hadn’t arrived on the scene, surely Hulu CEO Jason Kilar would be Time’s Person of the Year, right?

A look at the latest data on Hulu, however, puts the site’s performance into perspective. While unquestionably a success story, the hullabaloo over Hulu needs to be taken down a notch.

A key component of the Hulu hype is the so-called long tail, the notion that the Internet’s limitless capacity enables library content to be monetized more effectively than traditional distribution. While YouTube drowns in user-generated content that advertisers won’t touch with a 10-foot pole, Hulu has shunned that category to amass an ocean of premium-only content.

In terms of movies, here are some recent additions to Hulu’s lineup: “21 Grams,” “One True Thing,” “A River Runs Through It,” “In the Name of the Father,” “Gattaca,” “Rudy,” “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” “Air Force One,” and “A League of Their Own.”

Seasons and episodes have been added for “The Practice,” “The A Team,” “Major Dad,” “ReGenesis,” “The Three Stooges,” and “News Radio.”
