Working it Out

Studs Terkel was one of our finest oral historians, cataloguing the true voices of everyday Americans from all walks of life in his books during a career that spanned decades. He himself was an American original. One of those great books, “Working,” was turned into a musical by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso in the 1970s, and the play will be performed right nearby in Linden, Texas, on Saturday at Music City Texas Theater. I spoke with director Dub Narramore about the upcoming play sponsored by the Cass County Performing Arts Council, and he says he’s been working with a diverse group of folks to get this show ready. That’s fitting. Here’s our interview with him and story on the show from last Friday’s Gazette: Arts Council Presents Musical Adaptation of Working.

As a classical guitarist, Texas-based Stacy Arnold plays all sorts of venues to showcase his beautiful instrument of choice—from weddings to wine tastings. And Arnold, based in Waxahachie, says there’s more music arranged for guitar than many people realize. His Friday concert in Queen City, Texas, at the Morris Upchurch Middle School will indeed include numbers from the Renaissance to more contemporary times. He comes to the area as part of the Cass County Performing Arts Council’s season. His show starts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Here’s our story on his concert from the Friday Accent page in the Gazette: Classical guitarist presents concert in Queen City.

E-Flat for Porch Music

The E-Flat Porch Band plays what they affectionately call “porch music,” the kind of old school acoustic blues and folk tunes that go well with some casual times on the porch. In fact, Rudy Littrell and Duane Brown named their duo after the porch where they first practiced in McKinney, Texas. And even though these guys play music that dates as far back as the Depression, they consider themselves “angst-free” acoustic players. A wooden soda pop box is among the instruments Littrell plays. They’ll be coming to Cass County (Linden, Texas, specifically) on Friday, Jan. 29, for a 7:30 p.m. concert at the Fairview Community Center. Country blues, Texas folk, jazz, and old country all work themselves into the mix of what they play. They’ve put out three CDs and play original music in addition to covers of such artists as Woody Guthrie, Mance Lipscomb, Mose Allison, Townes Van Zandt, and Lightnin’ Hopkins. Down below is a photo of them in their natural habitat. Tickets are $20 at the door. More info: 903-799-8841 or casscopa@yahoo.com. Their show is part of the Cass County Performing Arts Council season. We’ll have my interview with the band in Friday’s Gazette.

A Joyful Show

Joy Cunningham will bring her one-woman show to Atlanta, Texas, as part of the Cass County Performing Arts Council’s season on Friday at 7 p.m. It’s a dinner theater performance, though, and the good eats begin at 6:30 p.m. Cunningham bases her “Goin’ to Georgia” production on a legendary family trip. She originally wanted to write a novel about it, but it wound up as a live, theatrical performance instead that’s stirred laughter in people for years.

The show is at the First United Church’s Lindsey Lane Campus. Tickets are $30 for non-members. Reservations required: call Christy Wooldridge at 903-799-8983 or Ruth Halleck at 903-799-8841 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.
