James Owens Sr., 71, of Ashdown, Ark., died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, in Texarkana, Texas.

Mr. Owens was born Dec. 10, 1940, in Ashdown. He was an employee of Nekoosa/Georgia Pacific, former member of Harmony Skylarks and Soul Stirrers and member of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he was a choir member and men’s Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Mary “Polly” Owens of Ashdown; four sons, James Owens Jr. of Texarkana, Curtis G. Winfrey Jr. of Ashdown, Michael Owens of Lewisville, Texas, and Detrice Winfrey of Killeen, Texas; three daughters, Felecia “Lisa” Covington of San Diego and Rhonda Howard and Leslie Martyr of Killeen; four sisters, Louise Cook of Madera, Calif., and Lillie Brisco, Ida Robinson and Shirley Winslow of Texarkana; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Daniel Flemmings officiating. Burial will be in Ashdown Memorial Gardens under direction of Richardson Hill Funeral Home.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the church.
