Ricin suspect competent for trial
A New Boston, Texas woman accused of mailing ricin-laced letters to President Barack Obama and others is competent to stand trial.
Shannon Guess Richardson’s lawyer, Tonda Curry of Tyler, Texas, said the defense accepts the competency findings by a Bureau of Prisons psychologist Richardson is competent to stand trial.
Curry entered a not guilty plea on Richardson’s behalf at Wednesday’s hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Caroline Craven in a Texas-side courtroom of Texarkana’s downtown federal building.
Curry asked Craven to schedule Richardson for a detention hearing to determine if she’ll remain behind bars or be released while her case proceeds. Craven scheduled the hearing for Sept. 11. The government has opposed pretrial freedom for Richardson in earlier court filings.
