Ashdown man dies in single-vehicle accident
An Ashdown, Ark., man is dead after an early morning, single-vehicle auto accident, officials say.
Benjamin Carl Hegwood, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident where Leopard Drive and the U.S. Highway 59 bypass meet.
Officers arrived on scene about 12:04 a.m. after dispatchers received a notification from OnStar Telematics Call Center that a collision had occurred at that location.
Hegwood's 2008 GMC pickup was northbound on the bypass and entered the median about 200 feet from the Leopard Drive overpass. The vehicle then went airborne off the bridge embankment and landed on the roadway below. The vehicle crossed Leopard Drive where it struck an embankment on the other side of the road, rolling and coming to rest on its wheels.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Hegwood’s body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy. There were no other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the accident. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
