Bowie County Sheriff's Office warns residents of scam
Bowie County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a scam where the caller uses the name of a reserve deputy in an attempt to solicit donations.
"All area residents and businesses need to be aware that this is a scam and they should not give out any information to anyone who calls them under this ruse," said Bowie County Chief Deputy Jeff Neal.
An unknown person has been calling local businesses to solicit donations in the name of the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office and using the name Jim Nelson as an endorsement, said Neal.
While Jim Nelson is an active reserve deputy for the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office, he has not authorized anyone to use his name, Neal said.
The caller is leaving phone numbers of 903-686-0242 or 903-686-2042 as contacts, he said.
These are Longview, Texas, phone numbers, but neither of them are working numbers.
The Bowie County Sheriff’s Office never calls anyone to solicit donations and anyone who has a question about validity of someone using the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office name should call 903-798-3149 or 911.
