With all the anticipation surrounding the total solar eclipse on Monday, some may have overlooked another big event starting this weekend in the Twin Cities.

The 79th annual Four States Fair and Rodeo kicks off Friday, promising plenty of fun for all ages.

The carnival midway will once again feature dozens of rides to the midway, in addition to challenging games where one can win a stuffed animal or some other keepsake.

Also on tap from day one are the many types of "fair food" available. A lot of locals hit the fair just to sample the offerings from the church and civic groups, as well as professional vendors. You can work off any over indulgence with a stroll through numerous art and craft exhibits, as well as the popular petting zoo and livestock area.

There will be music, monster trucks and a demolition derby. And on April 11, the annual rodeo begins, bringing some of the country's best cowboys to town.

This year's fair will feature a special Solarbration starting at 9 a.m. on Monday for the big eclipse.

Festivities continue through April 14.

The Four States Fair and Rodeo has been a part of our community since 1945. For many families going to the fair is a family tradition. Residents who attended the fair as kids in those first years are now bringing their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In a era when many fairs are being forced to shut down due to declining attendance, our fair carries on and just keeps getting better.

So head out to the fair and have a great time. It's a bit of history, alive and well right here in Texarkana.
