EDITORIAL | Loyalty or Ability? President Trump's choice of running mate especially important this time around

It didn't take long for former President Donald Trump to declare victory Saturday in the South Carolina Republican presidential primary.

It was just a few minutes after the polls closed and major media outlets had already declared him the winner.

It was the final blow to challenger Nikki Haley. She served two terms as governor of the state but could only take 39.5% of the vote to President Trump's 59.8%

Haley has vowed to carry on at least until Super Tuesday. But let's face it, you can stick a fork in her. She's done.

The big questions now are can former President Trump defeat incumbent President Joe Biden in the November election? And who will he pick as his running mate?

The answer to the first question is yes, it's more than possible he can beat President Biden.

And that makes President Trump's choice for vice president especially important this time around.

The former president faces numerous legal problems, including criminal charges that could include prison time. So there's a chance -- slim to be sure -- but a chance nonetheless his running mate may rise to the top job.

Among the Republicans said to be in the running are South Carolina U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

Two names reportedly not on the list are Haley and President Trump's other chief rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Vice President Mike Pence served President Trump well doing the first term. He was calm, considered and steadfastly loyal -- until the end when he wisely chose the U.S. Constitution over the president's desire to stay in the White House by any means necessary.

President Trump's anger was fierce. He felt betrayed. And that may cloud his judgment in picking a running mate this time around.

We hope not.

We can't predict who the former president will tap. But we hope he makes choice on experience and ability, rather than blind loyalty.
