Prep Basketball: McLeod shares two top all-district awards

McLEOD, Texas -- McLeod, which finished runner-up to state-ranked basketball power Hawkins, shared two of the top awards and placed three players on the All-District 21-A first team.

The Longhorns' Kannon Dempsey was named offensive player of the year with Hawkins' Brayden Givens. Dempsey is a senior and Givens is a sophomore.

McLeod 7-foot sophomore Colton Spence shared the newcomer of year award with Big Sandy's Treyvion Coleman.

Longhorns making the first team were Grayson Owens, Jaxon Smith and Austin McGray, all seniors.

McLeod, coached by Steven Lambeth, posted a 34-4 record this season. The Horns reached the area round of the playoffs where they lost to San Augustine.

Hawkins' Derek Hollman was the district's most valuable player, Paul Smith sixth man of the year and Ty Davis coach of the year.

Ore City's Jordan Escamilla was tabbed defensive player of the year.

Hawkins also had three players named to the first team. They were Boston Connor, Dawson Pruitt and Larry Moungle.

Hawkins had a 30-2 record this season, losing in the area playoffs to Timpson.
