EDITORIAL | Courtesy or Imposition? Would you give up a desirable airline seat so a family could sit together?

Let's suppose you book an airline flight. You are flying alone. You select a seat that you really like. Maybe even pay extra for a set with more legroom.

When you board the plane, a flight attendant approaches, asking you to give up your seat so a family of three can sit together.

What would you do?

At one time it was likely most would move to accommodate the family. These days, though, more and more people are refusing to give up their seat. It's even become something of a trend on social media, with passengers filming the interaction and posting the video online.

The posts are getting a lot of reaction. While some comments say giving up the seat is common courtesy, most say they would ignore the social pressure to move, adding it's an imposition and that single flyers are not responsible for a family's poor planning.

What about you? Would you give up your airline seat for a less desirable one to accommodate a family that wants to sit together? Or would you refuse?

Last Week: Right to Arms?

Last week's question was about a judge ruling illegal immigrants have a Second Amendment right to own a firearm. Should illegal immigrants have the same Second Amendment rights as American citizens? Or should the federal law barring them from possessing guns and ammunition stand?

My opinion is this, if the individual is here illegally, what constitutes them to bring the same as American citizens? It doesn't. If they were to come to America legally and followed the laws of this country and become citizens of America, then they would no doubt be protected under the constitution.. but till then I don't believe they should be protected under any law because they've violated the law to begin with by being here illegally. -- R.H., Texarkana, Texas

The 2nd Amendment, says individuals have the right to bear arms. Which means "anyone" (legal or illegal) in America can process a weapon to protect themselves and home. It does not state only Americans can bear arms, so be careful what you wish for. -- R.K., Texarkana, Texas
