Sheriff Resigns

Embattled Miller County Sheriff Linda Rambo has resigned effective 1 p.m. Monday, county officials announced Friday.

Rambo has been under pressure to resign or face malfeasance in office charges for allowing a jailer, married to her nephew, to use a county truck and an Arkansas Department of Correction inmate held at the jail to move the jailer’s sister. Dolly Simmons, the jailer, also resigned Friday, effective immediately.

The Quorum Court will be charged with appointing an interim sheriff, who can run the Sheriff’s Office and the jail until recently elected Sheriff Ron Stovall can take over Jan 1. Under state law governing succession, Stovall cannot be appointed to the interim spot because an appointee to unfinished term cannot succeed himself, even if he has been elected to the post.

Rambo has been under fire most of her two-year term for her administration of the jail. The jail has been riddled with problems, including multiple incidents of contraband, numerous escapes and even an attempt by a man to break into the jail to provide contraband.
