Cheers and Jeers
JEERS: To another local bank selling their loyal customers out to some national conglomerate who could care less
about Texarkana. Once again, we will have to call, who knows where to, get simple answers to everyday problems. This is the third time solid local banks have sold out to national banking interest. Not once has it been beneficial to the customers. Check the Internet and see how many complaints have been filed against our local bank and then see how many thousands of complaints have been filed against the incoming bank. To the share holders I say, please don’t sell, but I am sure money will talk and cause the inevitable collapse of this fine bank. I, for one, will take my two cents and put it in yet another local bank until they sell me out too.—M.M., Texarkana, Ark. CHEERS: Today was my 4-year-old granddaughter’s first day at pre-K. At noon as I went to pick her up, I very foolishly pulled too far up on parking lot and my front tires sunk in the very wet grass. Front-wheel driven, my car would not back up and just sunk deeper. I picked up my granddaughter and called a tow truck to get me out. Before the truck arrived, two good Samaritans (Marcus and Chris) pulled me out with their vehicle. I cancelled the tow truck. These young men would accept no money. I never saw them before but they were a God-send to me today.—H.I., Texarkana, Texas JEERS: To the Liberty-Eylau school districts bus #626. The primary school lets kids out at 3:10 where they get on the bus and then (it) stops at two or three other schools before bringing them home. Our neighborhood is not off the beaten path. It is only 2 miles away from the furthest school, right off of Lake Drive. The bus stop nearest to my home sees sixth-grade through 12th-grade dropped off at 4:00, but the pre-K through 5th don’t get off until 4:45 or later. Plus there are more kids still on the bus, meaning that some kids are not home until after 5 p.m. Almost two hours on a hot, crowded bus is ridiculous. These kids are on the bus so long they’re falling asleep and have to be woken up at their stops. Also, some of the older kids wait at the stop for their younger siblings, to walk them the rest of the way home, and these kids stand in the heat for almost an hour. Is every bus still dropping kids off at 5:00? I find that hard to believe. So, as a concerned parent, I would ask that L-E seriously reconsider redrawing their bus routes for the safety and health of our children.—S.F., Texarkana, Texas Cheers and Jeers are published each Saturday on the Opinion Page of the Texarkana Gazette.
