Cheers and Jeers
JEERS: To “In Our View” on Sept. 7 for the statements about the Miller County sheriff, staff and jail. The present sheriff took office Jan. 1, 2007, but was blamed for abysmal conditions mid-January 2008. Newspaper accounts of lawsuits, prison beatings and drug smuggling dated prior to Jan. 1, 2007.—T.B.S., Texarkana, Ark.
CHEERS: To the Texarkana Gazette for their recent outstanding article about the Texarkana College Foundation. As pointed out in an equally good editorial last Saturday, indeed the Foundation is VERY healthy and prospering. The editorial goes on to ask who should get the credit for the Foundation’s sound financial condition. Most of the credit goes to the many generous men, women and organizations throughout the Texarkana area who have made charitable contributions to the Foundation, regardless of the amount. But it doesn’t matter how much money is given to an organization if it is not managed responsibly. Frank Coleman has kept both Texarkana College and the Texarkana College Foundation in impeccable financial condition for almost 30 years now, and it is a credit to his incredible business acumen that the Foundation’s investments have grown and flourished these past 10 years. The gifts that have come to the TC Foundation are due in part to the fact that donors know the institution is fiscally sound. This community knows and trusts that their money will be well invested and taken care of with Frank Coleman at the helm of Texarkana College. Now a few TC Board members (whose vagaries of late make them not so trustworthy) want to remove Coleman from office prematurely. It’s doubtful the community will be as generous in the wake of this injustice. Jeers to the five who voted Coleman out.—C.L., Texarkana, Texas Cheers and Jeers are published each Saturday on the Opinion Page of the Texarkana Gazette. Cheers and Jeers must be limited to 100 words or less, and may be edited for length and legal considerations.
