Cheers and Jeers
CHEERS: To the nice people that helped me last Saturday. I did not get anyone’s name and they did not get mine. I just want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I thank you for stopping, being concerned and helping. May God bless you all!—L.G.A., Texarkana, Texas.
CHEERS: To Mr. Neilson Lively who witnessed an accident on Monday, Sept. 22, at the Jefferson exit. He not only stopped the vehicle who caused three vehicles to wreck, but he helped that lady turn her vehicle around, which was going the wrong way down the Jefferson exit, called the police and stopped at each vehicle that was involved in the accident, checking to see if everyone was all right. God bless you, Mr. Lively.—S.L.P., Texarkana, Texas CHEERS: To the Four States Fair Calf Scramble Committee for the work they do for the calf scramble each year. This event has grown over the last several years enabling more area FFA & 4-H students to be recipients of a $500 scramble certificate. With the money the students receive they purchase a calf. They are responsible for feeding and caring for the calf and showing it at the Junior Livestock Show the following year. Without this program some students would not be financially able to purchase a calf. It is a great experience for the students to learn responsibility, showmanship and competitiveness. Steve McGowan, Lisa Barr, Richard and Karen Norris, Ray and Cindy Lee, Amanda Moore and Michael Meadows are to be commended for their work in acquiring sponsors and prizes for the scramble.—R.B., Simms, Texas JEERS: to J.H.’s Jeer printed Saturday, Sept. 27. Far be it from me to call you a racist, J.H., however if “it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck.” You neglected to mention another Democrat, President Bill Clinton, who was called the “The First Black President” by some people. I have heard nothing from the Obama camp to indicate socialism or Marxism, rather change from the status quo in Washington that has disenfranchised the middle class, while giving tax breaks to the rich. The last 7 years and 10 months has been enough to “gag a maggot,” but you want more of the same. Remember “If nothing changes, there is no change.” If no Democratic candidate has received the majority of the white votes in 44 years, that should tell you something about the people who vote with their prejudices, rather than their minds. Check some of the “half truths” about Obama before you complain about Palin.—H.H.L., Texarkana, Ark. JEERS: To all who are not giving this election serious thought, or viewing with racial blinders or pandering in mind. If I am black and I do not support Obama (or if I were white and supported McCain), know assuredly that “judging others based on the content of their character, not the color of their skin,” in full assessment, yields the only candidates for serious consideration. I simply do not trust Obama nor Biden, as their words seriously betray their actions, and find their values seriously out of line with my expectations for leadership of this country. I appreciate the experience with age and leadership experience McCain brings to the table. Therefore I support McCain/Palin, their values and courageous demonstrated leadership. God bless America.—R.M., Texarkana, Ark. Cheers and Jeers are published each Saturday on the Opinion Page of the Texarkana Gazette. Cheers and Jeers must be limited to 100 words or less, and may be edited for length and legal considerations. No personal attacks, business/commercial, or consumer complaint Cheers or Jeers will be printed. You may submit your Cheers and Jeers to us at P.O.
