Cheers and Jeers
JEERS: To the Texarkana, Texas, future animal control facility. I am appalled that you are going to euthanize the animals after a 72-hour period. You are not giving these animals a chance for a loving home. According to the article, there are three options for your facility: owner can claim the animal, rescue group can claim the animal or euthanize the animal. What you are doing is putting these animals on death row without any chance for an appeal. The sad thing about that is they are all truly innocent. In the article it states that “our role is not the rescue side.” Well I think you will be euthanizing many animals that someone in our community would have loved to adopt. Maybe you should pay more attention to what the Arkansas side is doing and learn a lesson, “Why fix something that isn’t broken?” —A.D.C, Wake Village, Texas
CHEERS: I would like to send out a cheer for the crew from the Public Works Department who worked this past Sunday on the intersection of State Line and Broad Street. I looked out my window and saw a group of men, each hard at work, to complete a task with motivation and purpose. These gentlemen deserve recognition because they invested themselves in the job and made me proud to reside in their city. Brian Batchelor, Charles Pashcen, Leon Simm, Bennie Muldrew, and Jeff Hill, the director of Public Works, in an effort to accommodate the people of the city, came out early and worked several hours to improve the streets of our downtown. Thank you and all the others like you who put in consistent and effective work to make this a good place to live.—H.W., Texarkana, Ark. JEERS: To H.H.L. Jeers printed October 4 addressing “racism” in voting. Obama’s record: Voted against banning partial birth abortion; Voted “No” on notifying parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions.; Sponsored $845 billion “Global Poverty Act” (S. 2433) through Biden’s Senate committee. (Global tax on American taxpayers, signing Kyoto Agreement, ratifies treaties including International Criminal Court, commits nations to ban small arms/weapons, requires America to send the United Nations about 0.7% of the gross national product) ... waiting to be signed into law should Obama become president; Voted “No” on prohibiting lawsuits against gun manufacturers; Supports increasing amount of Social Security paid; Voted “No” on repealing alternative minimum tax; Voted “No” on repealing “death” tax. I am voting against Obama because of the above ... no racism involved.—J.R. T., Texarkana, Texas JEERS: To our “intellectually” challenged president for even thinking that people should be allowed to put their Social Security investments in the stock market. I am confident the Republican challengers for the White House would not think as shallow as he did.—R.E.B. Texarkana, Ark. CHEERS: To the nice gentleman, Bob, who cleaned up the orange graffiti (which included names and a word that belongs only to the male gender) at the corner of Lakeridge Drive and Ridge Row on Monday, Oct. 6. Jeers to those who wrote the graffiti and Jeers to the parents who did not make them clean it up instead of having an elderly gentleman do it, which did not teach the young people anything.—P.A.J., Texarkana, Texas CHEERS: To everyone who stopped to help my mom and me when my vehicle was broadsided and overturned in the intersection of Sowell Lane and New Boston Road on Sept. 29.—S.S. and W.F., Wake Village, Texas CHEERS: To Nash First Baptist Church for their stand against alcohol being legalized in Nash. Jeers to Sarah Palin for addressing our citizenry as “Joe Six Pack.” Also Jeers to Cindy and John McCain who have made a fortune from their brewery. Alcohol is a legal drug that has devastated many families. It is not a laughing matter.—M.S.H., Nash, Texas JEERS: To television media. I am concerned about those that get political news from just one television network that perhaps they favor, including cable stations, are not getting the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have a favorite cable news station. For a while it was the only fair and balanced one I could find. Unfortunately, now it appears to be biased also. Even though it is biased toward my beliefs it should not be biased. I now go back and forth to TV news stations and I am appalled at the favoritism I find. The only way to get the truth about the presidential candidates is to go to their Websites or contact their campaigns and read about their stands on the issues. The majority of television news media have the same favorite presidential candidate and agenda. That is not right. It is un-American. Please get your facts straight before you vote. Don’t be mislead by a biased media. There are core differences in the candidates that matter. Don’t be mislead by the fluff or fearmongering that is going on. Please vote and know the truth about who you are voting for.—P.P.S., Texarkana, Ark. JEERS: To the Texas side on the proposed animal shelter. I don’t think you should name it a shelter because it isn’t a shelter. It is a slaughterhouse for irresponsible pet owners who don’t spay or neuter their pets and let them run free to get run over by cars or breed, bringing more pets that most owners don’t want. I would think the Texarkana, Texas, side of the city could come up with a better plan than the pet has 72 hours and then it is euthanized. Show some compassion. It isn’t the animal’s fault. It is the irresponsible pet owners.—A.A., Texarkana, Texas CHEERS: To those who put in long hours during Gustav and Ike to help those from Port Arthur, Texas. Dave Hall and staff from Bowie County OEM, Buz and his Red Cross Staff—what a job they did. Many organizations and churches were involved. To the shelter where I worked (Sugar Hill Methodist Church), thanks for a job well done. Annette, Molly Joy, Gerane and of course Brother Rob and many others, too numerous to name. Texarkana cities, Bowie and Miller counties rose to the occasion and made a name for a caring and helpful group. To the police departments, sheriff departments of both cities for their quick response to the storm on Saturday night. As a Miller County resident, I consider it an honor to be part of this operation. Thanks.—L.W. Huddleston, Texarkana, Ark. JEERS: to Texarkana, Texas, City Manager Larry Sullivan on his remarks regarding the new Texas-side animal shelter on the front page of the Sunday paper. A new city manager who does not care for community pets—what makes you think he will care about our citizens? Call the shelter what you really mean—death camp. Maybe you could spent a little time around the Texarkana, Ark., city manager and he could educate you on the compassion of an animal’s life. Watch out Randy Sams, you provide shelter for the homeless—you might be next on Dr. Sullivan’s 72-hour list.—A.F., Texarkana, Texas |
