Cheers and Jeers
CHEERS: To those whose vote is based on Information rather than Emotion. In order to be an informed voter, a person needs to know where the candidates stand on the issues. For years now I have used the Free Market Foundation’s “Voters’ Guide.” It is a comprehensive, nonpartisan guide for Texans. It features both Federal and State Candidates. You may go to www.freemarketvotersguide.com to view the candidates and their position on the issues. Take time to become an informed voter.—J.H.D., Texarkana, Texas
JEERS: And more Jeers to my city councilman, Brent Stewart, and to the new Texas-side mayor and city manager. Once again my complaint about the city’s failure to repave College Drive for more than 25 years has been ignored. I had hoped the changes in City Hall would at least result in a response to my complaint, but apparently it’s business as usual, i.e. ignore the taxpayers. College Drive, and in particular the stretch between State Line Avenue and Summerhill Road, is in deplorable shape and hasn’t been repaved since I moved here in 1983. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of dollars are being spent in Ward 3 to line a drainage ditch with concrete. Incomprehensible.—R.W., Texarkana, Texas JEERS: To the lawyers in the Texarkana area. Who take your money and promise services and almost six months later have not had a final court date. Is there not a set time limit on how long a person is to wait for their lawyer to represent them as they are paid to do? They have to have their money up front, then delay your representation. My children are getting awful hungry. Someone please advise as my lawyer won’t return my phone calls.—M.L.B., Texarkana, Texas JEERS: To the “yellow dog Democrats” who think that just because we are registered Democrat that we should vote for every yellow dog that gets on the ticket.—T.S., Texarkana, Ark. JEERS: I’m taking a deep breath and needing this statement to be as clear and understandable as possible. I’ve finished reading “An appeal to Christian Common Sense and any other kind. (Oct. 9 issue) and am baffled at the mind frame of this appeal. I would like to state that the “other kind” of common sense is rational common sense i.e. sound judgments. Also to answer the question, “if that’s not a baby in there, what is it?” A zygote (a fertilized egg), which has the potential to become a fully developed human being or not. To make clear: I would like the attention of this town, this state, this nation to remember the First Amendment to the Constitution: Separation of Church and State.—A.H., Texarkana, Texas JEERS: To the Redwater visitors’ bleachers on the football field for having no steps. The visiting team fans who are older and it’s hard for them to climb these steep bleachers. I have back and leg problems and had to crawl up the bleachers when Paul Pewitt played Redwater two weeks ago. Pewitt as well as other teams have old fans who follow them to their games and these bleachers are very hard on them to get up and down. Redwater needs to do something about this to make it more enjoyable to attend football games there.—F.T., Naples, Texas JEERS: To family values groups who are concerned about the upcoming election. Why don’t you protect the McCains for their $100 million income from the sale of alcohol? Cindy McCain has a Budweiser Beer distributorship in Phoenix. Their homes, cars and wealth comes from the sale of alcohol. Her wealth is estimated to exceed over $100 million. (She will not disclose her actual wealth.) We all know that alcohol addiction causes death and destroys families.—J.T., Texarkana, Texas Cheers and Jeers are published each Saturday on the Opinion Page of the Texarkana Gazette.
