Cheers and Jeers

JEERS: To the De Queen, Ark., powers that be for banning pit bull dogs and three other varieties that are similar and all pit bull mixes. These dogs have done nothing. There is not even a complaint—someone decided they must be outside the city limits. The people have three months to comply. These animals and their owners are facing the heartbreak of separation. Sometimes pits are the only family that some people have. As a pit lover myself my heart is so sad for the plight of the pits and the people of De Queen, Ark. A few people on a board play “God.”

Pits have gotten a bad rap. This law should be reversed.—M.P., Texarkana, Texas

CHEERS: To Texas High crossing guard Claudia Brown. She is the best public relations tool that TISD has! She always greets the students and parents with a friendly smile, rain or shine. What a positive image she portrays as the first person the public encounters when they arrive on campus. I feel certain that her contagious smile and “hand clenched” wave have a great impact on setting the tone for many students’ day at school. TISD should be proud of this employee!—J.P., Texarkana, Texas

CHEERS: To the Arkansas High School Class of 2009. The senior pep rally held on Friday, Nov. 14 was amazing! Thanks to the parents, sponsors, and staff responsible for this awesome display of school pride and school spirit. Great things are happening at AHS.—R.S., Texarkana, Ark.

JEERS: To the City of Texarkana, Texas, Fire Department and Police Department for not cleaning up good after a wreck in front of my house on North Robison Road. They cleaned up the plastic but they left all of the glass. I am very lucky that I haven’t got a flat tire.—J.E.C., Texarkana, Texas

JEERS: To the Hooks School District with considering hiring a school officer. You claim that a uniformed officer will make a huge difference at your schools. If you would force and hold the students accountable to the student code of conduct and rules set forth by the school board to eliminate the violence, fighting and many other problems that are being looked over, there would be no need to hire an officer to enforce the rules and regulations that are in place. How many students have been fined for the fighting that goes on daily? Save the district money and enforce what you have already set forth.—MM.M., Hooks, Texas

CHEERS: To Stephen Daniels (Letter to the Editor Nov. 13) and his explanation concerning the importance of the Second Amendment to all Americans—liberal or conservative, gun owner or not. To violate, void or remove the Second Amendment right of the people would be a first step in eliminating the other constitutionally guaranteed rights that are cherished. At what point would they say a warrant for search and seizure is no longer needed or that an individual cannot confront a witness against him. If it starts here, where does it end?—J.G.W., Nash, Texas

JEERS: To the Texarkana, Ark., city government for spending thousands  of  dollars for all these “studies” that never bring about results. If a company/industry is interested in locating in the area, they will spend the money for feasibility studies.

In the past 10 years, we were to get a Super K-mart, Home Depot & Cabellas, which never materialized. Even though the Jefferson extension was put in with taxpayer money. The Sports Complex fell through ... now they’re expanding on the Texas side. Just recently, the Convention Center fell through ... now to be built  on the Texas side. We do not need a seasonal water park that only operates during the summer months ...we need big-box retailers that bring in sales every day of the year. Enough of the “pipe dreams that go up in smoke” that have only led to higher taxes.—D.B., Texarkana, Ark.
