Cheers and Jeers

JEERS: To the inconsiderate folks who put up signs to advertise garage sales and never take them down. No doubt you drive past your signs daily, yet you won’t take the few minutes necessary to remove them. You must not take much pride in your community. There is currently a sign at the intersection of 991 and Highway 67. It has been there almost a month. Garage salers, please take down your signs. The rest of us don’t want to look at your trash.—R.G., Texarkana, Texas

JEERS: To A.C, Wake Village, Texas. To quote you in your letter to cheers and jeers. “Although I share in your concerns that the government is moving too far left into a more secular form of body, let us not forget that its original intent was to indeed separate our new nation from religious rule.”

If you would care to actually read the Constitution, you will find the intent of the first amendment is written very clearly. It states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” The founders were afraid someone would establish a government religion, such as the Church of England. There is no separation of church. If the founders had tried to forbid slavery in the Constitution when it was written, it would have never been enacted. There were too many different opinions on the subject at that particular time.—J.S., Texarkana, Texas
