Cheers and Jeers
JEERS: I had to chuckle when I read in today’s Gazette (7-3-2009), that our part-time, Arkansas-side city attorney, Ned Stewart, wanted and got an increase of more than double his current monthly salary. I had suspected it for a long time, but now am convinced that our Board of Directors is not much more than a rubber stamp group and their meetings a mere formality. All of us wish we could double our monthly salary to more than $6,000 a month while only working part-time. This is so ridiculous, it would be laughable if it were not our tax money being spent (wasted). In my humble opinion, the $3,000 that Mr. Stewart was already being paid was way too much for part-time work. Come election time, we need to remember who done what and vote accordingly. Newly elected members Ms. Davis and Mr. Harris need some help, we need to clean house.—R.L., Texarkana, Ark.
JEERS: To Ethel Channon, a deacon in the Episcopal Church and managing editor of the Texarkana Gazette, for her criticism of Rep. Cynthia Davis, Republican of Missouri, for speaking out against government intervention in what, according to Amendment 10 of the Constitution of the United States of America, is a state function—“powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” And for Ms. Channon calling Representative Davis a “right wing nut” and for Channon’s reference to the “Bible” in support of her criticism of Rep. Davis’s comments about government-operated summer nutrition programs. Haven’t you read in your Bible that caring for the needy is a function of the church and members of the church, not the federal government? How can you throw the Holiness, Covenant and Deuteronomic codes (all referencing Old Testament laws) at her, while you (liberals) encourage doctors to ignore the Hippocratic oath (the old version) in murdering innocent babies.—D.W., Hooks, Texas CHEERS: I would like to take this time to say a very Cheers to the lady and the two gentlemen who helped me out of my wheelchair when it tipped over. And they stayed until I got back into the house. Cheers to the other lady for getting my mail for me, which I was doing in the first place. There are still some kindness in folks around yet.—C.J.D., Texarkana, Texas JEERS: To the City of Wake Village for not requiring homeowners/renters to maintain even minimal standards with regards to their property. Take a drive down Greenfield (for example) and open your eyes—it’s very obvious who takes pride in their property. I am so tired of picking up trash from my “neighbors” yards once it blows into my yard on a weekly basis.—C.A.F., Wake Village, Texas CHEERS: To Sarah Palin. She is a breath of fresh air and a politician of “we the people.” Her resignation speech was excellent. Jeers to our form of government which has become the exact opposite of that established by our founding fathers. It has become a tyrannical, despotic oligarchy which rules over us and refuses to represent us. If “we the people” do not act now to recall or impeach those in the government who have become the ruling elite, then what is left of our freedoms will be entirely gone before we know it. This includes every representative in the federal government at the House or Senate, the judiciary, and the executive branches of government who seem to believe in a form of socialism, which is antithetical to our constitution. This also includes every representative at the state level who voted to take federal money which allows the federal government to control the individual state. It is time to return to the basic principles of “In God we trust” and not trust in any man or political party. —B.S., Texarkana, Texas |
