What a pleasure it was to read Russell McDermott’s column of Feb. 7 detailing the story of Ma & Pa Kettle. As a teenager, I became acquainted with Betty MacDonald due to a Reader’s Digest Condensed version of her book “Onions in the Stew.” This whetted my appetite for “The Egg and I,” which I finally found at my local library. I read at least one more of her books at the time but always remember them fondly. I vaguely remembered the Kettles came from “The Egg and I.”

I had no idea the MacDonald version of the Kettles sparked a lawsuit. I found the account...
