Troopers shoot, kill man suspected of wounding a deputy

VAN BUREN, Ark.—A man suspected of wounding a Crawford County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed after state police say he pointed a shotgun at troopers.

The man, Loyad James Carol, 42, was hiding in woods behind his residence near Van Buren on Sunday evening when two troopers, using a thermal-imaging device and a flashlight, spotted him, said state police spokesman Bill Sadler.

The troopers—Cpl. Robin Kuykendall and Cpl. Chris Waters—ordered Carol to put down his weapon but instead he pointed the shotgun at the officers, Sadler said in a news release.

Kuykendall and sheriff’s Sgt. Shawn Firestine fired their guns at Carol, Sadler said. Carol was taken to Summitt Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, officials said.

Crawford County sheriff’s Investigator Ken Howard said Monday that the Deputy Brand Ingle was hit with one shotgun pellet in his head and a dozen in the leg. Ingle’s protective vest stopped pellets that hit him in the chest, Howard said.

“He was released from the hospital,” Howard said.

The deputy was wounded by Carol at the same time the other officers opened fire, Howard said.

Authorities were summoned to the home at about 10 p.m. for a disturbance call.

“That escalated to a man with a gun,” Howard said.

The shots were fired at 11:10 p.m.

Sadler said Kuykendall was temporarily removed from duty, pending an internal investigation. The move is standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting. A Crawford County Sheriff’s Department news release said Firestine and another deputy at the scene, Brandon Trent, are both off active duty pending the investigation.

Sadler said state police would not release information about the number of rounds fired.

Last Wednesday near Hope, a state trooper shot and killed a suspect in a burglary and homicide when the suspect shot and wounded the trooper.

Special Agent Scott Clark was wounded in the shoulder and right arm in an exchange of gunfire with Fred Moore, 43, of rural Hempstead County. Moore was pronounced dead.
