Huckabee ends presidential race with money in the bank

LITTLE ROCK—Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee spent $16.2 million in his bid for the Republican nomination for president and ended his campaign about $30,000 in the black.

Huckabee often cited his ability to run his campaign with a relatively small budget as evidence that he could be trusted as president with taxpayer money. The campaign finance documents filed Sunday also show that Huckabee spent $17,700 for a two-night stay for himself and staff members at the Four Seasons Resort and Club in Irving, Texas, as his campaign made its last stand.

Huckabee dropped out after he lost the March 4 Texas primary and three others the same day.

The money raised by Huckabee was a pittance compared to others running for the presidency. Former candidate Mitt Romney drew on a personal fortune to help bankroll his effort. In March alone, presumptive GOP nominee John McCain raised $15.2 million, while Democratic candidate Barack Obama raised $41 million for the month and Hillary Rodham Clinton raised $20 million, though Clinton has a debt of $10.3 million.

Huckabee did not take out a loan to run his campaign.

Since dropping out, Huckabee formed a political action committee—Huck PAC. Rules allow his campaign to donate up to $5,000 to the PAC, and the campaign can also make donations of up to $2,000 to other campaigns. Huckabee can move an unlimited amount of money from his campaign to party coffers.

The documents show Huckabee had $80,000 in cash on hand, with $72,000 in invoices waiting to be paid. The campaign was owed $23,000 from media organizations for travel costs from when journalists were traveling with the campaign.

Supporters continued to give Huckabee’s campaign money after he dropped out, adding $78,000 to Huckabee’s total after March 4.
