Suspect in fatal El Paso car crash found in TV vehicle

EL PASO, Texas—Hours after a fatal car crash, the man suspected of causing the wreck was found sitting in a local television news vehicle drinking a photographer’s soda, El Paso County sheriff’s officials said Friday.

Marcelio Davila, 19, appeared drunk and disoriented when David Avila, a photographer for El Paso station KVIA-TV, found him sitting in his station vehicle nearly three hours after he allegedly caused a single car crash that killed a 29-year-old woman.

“I thought he was a homeless man, so I shook him and said ’Hey man, what are you doing?”’ Avila told KVIA.

Shortly after being found in the car, Davila, of Las Cruces, N.M., was arrested on charges of intoxication manslaughter and being responsible for an accident involving injury or death.

El Paso County Sheriff’s investigators said Davila registered a blood alcohol concentration of .17 and .16, twice the legal limit of .08 in Texas.

According to investigators, Davila was driving a 1999 Saturn SC2 eastbound on Interstate 10 just after 11 p.m. when he lost control of the car and skidded into a guard rail. The car then veered back on to the highway and rolled over at least once.

An unidentified 29-year-old woman riding in the front seat was killed in the crash. A second female passenger, whose name and age were not released, described the scene and Davila to investigators.

Davila was being held in the El Paso county jail on $75,000 bond. Jail records didn’t show whether he had a lawyer.
