Texas DPS trooper fatally shoots armed passenger
GREENVILLE, Texas—A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper shot and killed a Michigan man who authorities say confronted the lawman with a knife during a traffic stop.
Harold Austin, 30, of Jacksonville, Mich., was a passenger in a tractor-trailer rig Trooper Bubba Goodwin had stopped along Interstate 30, just east of Greenville, Sunday night, officials said. Austin confronted Goodwin while the trooper was speaking to driver Clifton Austin, 27, of Fayetteville, N.C., said DPS Cpl. Robert White said. The trooper opened fire as the man approached him with a knife, authorities said. White said he didn’t have any specifics Monday on the type of knife, how many times Goodwin fired or what caused the confrontation. Hunt County District Attorney F. Duncan Thomas said Monday that the case would be presented to a grand jury but he didn’t anticipate any charges. “My initial reaction is that he (Goodwin) was forced to draw his weapon,” Thomas said in a story for Tuesday’s editions of the Greenville Herald-Banner. Goodwin was placed on administrative leave while Texas Rangers investigate the shooting. Officials believe the two men in the tractor-trailer rig were brothers. No charges were filed against the driver. Featured Texarkana Business Directory Articles Featured Texarkana Business Directory Coupons
