Former New Mexico State Police chief takes Texas job

LAREDO, Texas—Former New Mexico State Police Chief Carlos Maldonado has been appointed police chief in the Texas border city of Laredo.

The Laredo City Council voted 5-3 Monday to approve his appointment. Maldonado worked for the New Mexico State Police for 24 years and was chief of the agency for three years before he retired Feb. 24, 2006.

Agustin Dovalina III, who was chief of the Laredo Police Department for 11 years, pleaded guilty to extortion charges last October.

He was sentenced last February to three years in prison for taking $13,000 in cash and gifts from a gambling business.
