Lumber company donates 2,900-acre forest in Arkansas
CAMDEN, Ark—A lumber company has donated a 2,900-acre conservation easement near Camden to The Nature Conservancy.
The land donated by Calion Lumber Co. includes mature bottomland hardwoods along with cypress and tupelo sloughs along six miles of the lower Ouachita River in Ouachita County. Officials plan to develop a conservation forestry management plan on 1,900 acres of the property. The remaining 1,000 acres will not be cut. Some of the 2,900 acres contain pine plantations and grass meadows. Officials say once the pine has been harvested, there will be no replanting and the land will be allowed to naturally reforest.
