WACO, Texas—A dinner cruise paddleboat sank on the Brazos River in Waco after water accidentally was pumped into the vessel.

The red, white and blue Spirit of the Rivers sternwheeler had no passengers at the time of Monday’s incident during maintenance to remove some accumulated rainwater.

Shane Morgan says he turned the pump on, then left for a few minutes, and returned to find water being pumped into the 70-passenger charter boat.

Morgan says he managed to get off the docked vessel, and remove the pump, just before the boat sank.

Morgan says the vessel had been scheduled for a cruise Monday night.

He planned to contact his insurance company about the accidental sinking.
