DPS arrests East Texas constable
TYLER, Texas—State troopers arrested an East Texas constable Friday on seven felony counts of tampering with a government document and three counts of official oppression.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said Smith County Precinct 1 Constable Henry Jackson has been part of an ongoing investigation into the private security company he owns. Jackson was released from the Smith County Jail in lieu of $425,000 bond. He could not immediately be reached for comment. DPS Trooper Jean Dark says the investigators found that deputy constables hired by Jackson’s private security firm often wore their constable uniforms while working for Jackson’s firm. Court documents listed 72 items of evidence. In addition, troopers seized bags of what was thought to be marijuana confiscated during drug arrests, a bottle of unidentified liquid, four computers, phone rosters, calendars, time sheets, file folders and e-mail correspondence from the constable’s office. At Jackson’s security business, troopers took three computers, mail, file cabinets, file folders, a weekly payroll sheet and multiple boxes of assorted documents.
