UA chief: State cuts mean lean budgets

MORRILTON, Ark.—Univer-sity of Arkansas System Presi-dent B. Alan Sugg says recently approved budgets for the system’s colleges and universities are lean in light of state cuts and uncertainty over whether more money will be available later this year.

“Everybody is assuming the cuts to state funding will stick,” Sugg said at a UA System board meeting in Morrilton. “We certainly don’t expect any more decreases, but we just don’t know if it will go up any.”

In April, state fiscal officers announced $107 million in budget cuts for the 2009 fiscal year that begins July 1, including about $32 million for the two- and four-year higher education institutions. Sugg said that any changes in state funding won’t be known until at least October.

The UA System board Friday approved budgets for its 17 units totaling nearly $1.7 billion for the 2009 fiscal year. Still, the system’s five universities were able to increase their budgets by relying on other revenue sources, such as tuition and student fees.

In all, the UA system budgets were: University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, $1.03 billion; University of Arkansas, $380.1 million; University of Arkansas at Little Rock, $137.1 million; Division of Agriculture, $88.1 million; University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, $61.4 million; University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, $53.9 million; University of Arkansas at Monticello, $35.6 million; Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas, $15.6 million; University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton, $11.8 million; University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, $9.8 million; Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts, $9 million; University of Arkansas Community College at Hope, $8.4 million; Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas, $7.9 million; UA System administration, $5.9 million; University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, $2.9 million; Criminal Justice Institute, $2.6 million; Arkansas Archeological Survey, $2.4 million.
