McALLEN, Texas—The mother of a 2-year-old boy who died over the weekend was arrested early Wednesday morning and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on a murder charge.

Maria Almaguer, 30, was arrested after an autopsy showed that Isaias Ismael Alvarez died of blunt force trauma.

McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez told The Monitor that Almaguer would be arraigned on one capital murder charge.

“This is just a really sad case of child physical abuse,” Rodriguez said.

Almaguer was being held at the McAllen jail Wednesday. Information was not available on whether she had obtained a lawyer.
