LONGVIEW, Texas— Police say a man suspected in a string of hotel robberies in the Tyler-Longview area is dead by his own hand after a Longview officer confronted him.

Longview police Sgt. Shaun Pendleton says the officer, whom he didn't identify, saw a pickup truck late Saturday that matched the description of the getaway vehicle used in at least five heists.

Pendleton says the officer began chasing the suspect, heard a gunshot and waited for backup.

They found the 29-year-old man lying next to the truck.

An autopsy's been ordered. Police are withholding his identity until his relatives can be notified of his death.
