Parents charged after 13-month-old left alone and trapped by dogfight
FRIENDSWOOD, Texas—A couple was charged Monday with child endangerment after their unattended baby was found trapped by a bloody dogfight at their Friendswood home.
Angela and Jonathan Newton, 28 and 26, allegedly left the child alone with the dogs, described as an American bulldog and a French bull mastiff. “The parents left the baby by itself, please get somebody over here,” a neighbor reportedly told a 911 dispatcher Monday morning. When officers arrived at the scene, a woman with a baseball bat was screaming that the baby was trapped inside the house with the dogs. Two older children, a 13-year-old and an 11-year-old, ran to a neighbor’s house for help when the dogs began attacking one another and told the neighbor the baby was trapped. The boys told police that one of the dogs had broken out of its cage and began attacking the other dog and they left the residence to get help. Officers forced open the door to the baby’s room where the dogs were fighting and shot one animal with a Taser. The other was hit with bean bag rounds. An officer was then able to pull the crying 13-month-old from her crib and take her outside. One of the dogs died at the scene and the other was taken into custody by animal control. Bond for each of the parents was set at $10,000. The child has been released to the custody of a relative. Jail officials did not have attorney information for the Newtons. |
