Volunteer fire chief dies after battling blaze
TEAGUE, Texas—The Teague Volunteer Fire Department chief has died from injuries suffered while fighting a blaze in downtown Teague, authorities said.
Robert Knight, 42, died Saturday night in a Tyler hospital, where he was taken after being injured when a wall collapsed while he and other firefighters were battling a blaze that day. Knight had been chief of the Teague Volunteer Fire Department since 1999, a decade after joining, and he also volunteered as a paramedic. He was a longtime resident of Teague, about 55 miles east of Waco, and worked as an engineer at BNSF Railroad. Last year he was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Teague Chamber of Commerce. The Texas A&M University graduate is survived by his wife, son and two daughters, according to his obituary. Services will be Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Teague followed by burial at Greenwood Cemetery, according to Bowers Funeral Home. The department declined to release further information.
