Public spiritedRebuilt Little Rock television tower to carry public radio antenna
LITTLE ROCK—A transmission tower that television station KATV plans to build on Shinall Mountain west of the city, to replace a tower that collapsed, will also send out signals for the two public radio stations at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, officials said Friday.
The ABC affiliate’s 2,000-foot tower in Redfield collapsed Jan. 11 while undergoing maintenance. Dale Nicholson, president and general manager of KATV, said last month that the Federal Communications Commission had granted a permit for a 1,150-foot tower atop Shinall Mountain. Deltic Timber Corp. owns the land where the tower is to be built. Ray Dillon, Deltic president and chief executive, joined with Nicholson on Friday in announcing an agreement that would allow an antenna at the 500-foot mark to transmit signals of KUAR and KLRE, the two public radio stations at the university. The provision of the antenna sites, as an in-kind contribution to UALR, is valued in the agreement at $2.7 million, the announcement said. A news release from UALR said the antennas on the new tower would increase the broadcast reach of both stations — KLRE for classical music, and KUAR for news, public affairs and a variety of music. The release said that, in addition, KATV will provide equipment space in a new state-of-the-art transmitter building at the tower site to the two public stations, and provide all maintenance and upkeep of the facility. “You won’t find many agreements like this between a commercial broadcaster and a public radio operation,” said Ben Fry, general manager of KUAR and KLRE. “It shows a real commitment from KATV and from Deltic Timber to support this community.” |
