Monday is deadline for Arkansas storm victims
LITTLE ROCK—Monday will be the last day for Arkansans who suffered losses in the deadly May storms to register for federal assistance, an emergency official says.
The 6 p.m. Monday deadline is for those who were affected by severe weather in May, including the May 2 tornado that tore through north-central Arkansas and the May 10 tornado that hit Stuttgart in Arkansas County. Charles S. Powell, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Little Rock, says some May disaster victims still have not asked FEMA for help and a few have mistakenly called FEMA’s public affairs office to register. To register, a person can go online at www.fema.gov or call (800) 621-3362. Residents of Arkansas, Benton, Cleburne, Conway, Crittenden, Grant, Lonoke, Mississippi, Phillips, Pulaski, Saline and Van Buren counties are still eligible for aid. FEMA provides grants for rebuilding homes and replacing property. The Small Business Administration also provides access to low-interest loans to those who register. So far, the government has approved $35.6 million in grants and loans to help 16,158 families statewide. At one time, FEMA had 340 workers in the state; that number has dropped to 89. And Monday, FEMA also will close its public affairs office in Arkansas. |
