CLEVELAND, Texas—An 87-year-old man was killed when his biplane crashed as he performed a barrel roll, authorities said.

Robert Barrie Scott of Kingwood took off in his plane Saturday afternoon from the Cleveland Municipal Airport, Department of Public Safety authorities told the Houston Chronicle for its Sunday online editions. Authorities said that after successfully taking off, Scott began to perform a barrel roll to the left. As he exited the roll, the plane crashed to the ground in a nosedive.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash is still under investigation.
