Soldier found dead in Fort Hood barracks

FORT HOOD, Texas—A soldier has been found dead in his barracks at Fort Hood, the third soldier’s death at the Central Texas Army post in two weeks.

Pfc. Travis Edward Dowd, 22, of Tallahassee, Fla., was found Tuesday in his room by fellow soldiers after he failed to report to formation, and he was later pronounced dead, Fort Hood officials said Thursday. Authorities are still trying to determine how he died, said Maj. David Shoupe, who said he could not comment on whether foul play is suspected.

Dowd joined the military in 2007 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division as an infantryman. His unit is to deploy to Iraq early next year.

Dowd’s decorations and awards include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.

Pvt. Eric Jonathan McSherry, 20, of Webster, was found dead of unknown causes Aug. 4, Fort Hood officials announced Thursday, declining to say exactly where or by whom he was found.

Spokeswoman Nancy Bourget said officials wanted to make sure his family was notified before releasing his name.
