PARKER, Texas—A Texas-sized homecoming planned Saturday for Olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin has been postponed by Texas-sized rains.
Nine inches of rain on Wednesday turned a 10-acre lot at Victory Church into mush and would make it hard for all the corvettes, floats, antique cars and horses expected to be at the parade to navigate, Mayor Joe Cordina said. A new date will be scheduled for some time within the next eight days. Liukin, a Parker resident, won five medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, including gold in the women’s all-around gymnastic finals. The mayor said people in her town have rallied around her success. Located about 19 miles north-northeast of Dallas, Parker is a tiny town of about 1,200 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
