Teen dies; 2 injured at Lake Hamilton
HOT SPRINGS, Ark.—A 14-year-old Sherwood girl died and two others were injured after apparently being electrocuted during a swim Saturday night in Lake Hamilton, sheriff’s deputies said.
Sarah Crotts was pronounced dead late Saturday night at St. Joseph’s Mercy Health Center in Hot Springs. Tamara Keele, 40, was in stable condition at St. Joseph’s on Sunday, while her son, Devin Keele, 7, was listed in good condition at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. Garland County sheriff’s department Lt. Rodney Neighbors told the Hot Springs Sentinel-Record newspaper that the three had been swimming near a boat dock at a resort off Albert Pike Road. Neighbors said deputies believe the three had been electrocuted around 8 p.m. Saturday. Crotts was under water for a considerable amount of time before rescuers were able to reach her, Neighbors said. Deputies said her body has been sent to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock for an autopsy. Neighbors said it appeared all three had been electrocuted, but the exact cause of the death and injuries won’t be known until the investigation is complete. The area around the boat dock was shut down over safety concerns after the incident. Neighbors said an electrician will examine the dock Monday to see if it or nearby boats potentially caused the electricity to flow through the water. Crotts’ death marks the third this summer at the popular fishing and swimming spot near Hot Springs. On July 24, two boats collided during a local bass tournament, killing Perry Kilby, 47, and Dewey Allen Tosh, 54. One boat had black tape over part of its green bow light, something investigators later said contributed to the crash. Investigators said both boats were going at least 35 mph when the collision occurred. |
