More flooding expected in South Texas
McALLEN, Texas—Deep South Texas awoke Monday to find itself once again on flash flood watch after torrential rains swamped the already saturated region again over the weekend and more thunderstorms prepared to cross the border from Mexico.
Jose Garcia, police and fire chief in Roma, said his city received another four inches of rain Sunday, re-flooding areas that had begun to dry out and sending nearly 60 residents scurrying back to the shelter. Several people were rescued from their homes, he said. This is typically the area’s rainy season, “but not this much,” Garcia said. “We’ve been overwhelmed by water.” The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for Starr, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg and Zapata counties until 7 p.m. CDT Monday and predicted as many as four more inches of rain from storms expected to begin mid-morning. The forecast attributed the rains to “abundant tropical moisture” and disturbances in the middle layers of the atmosphere over northeast Mexico. It has rained off and on for more than a week in an area already sopping from Hurricane Dolly. More than 13 inches of rain fell one week ago in and around Roma, a city of about 10,000 residents, 210 miles south of San Antonio.
