Lawyer charged after alleged courtroom kiss
FORT WORTH, Texas—An alleged kiss in a Texas courtroom has a longtime attorney facing a misdemeanor assault charge.
Jerry Loftin is set to stand trial in October on one count of assault by offensive contact for allegedly kissing a court reporter in a Johnson County courtroom last month. The Fort Worth attorney called the accusation “the silliest thing I ever heard.” His accuser, LuAnn Gill, said the facts will be presented in court. If convicted, Loftin faces a maximum fine of $500. “I didn’t really kiss her,” said Loftin, who has been an attorney for 35 years. “She said I patted her on the back and kissed her cheek. I reached down and blew her a kiss—well, I was next to her cheek.” Gill declined to discuss the case in detail to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “There is another side of this. He just doesn’t want anyone to hear it,” Gill said. Loftin, who has represented defendants ranging from drunk drivers to high-profile killers, said he was getting some documents when Gill tapped him on the shoulder, purportedly to tell him to be quiet. Loftin said he responded by going over to her, patting her on the back and bending down to apologize for disrupting proceedings. Loftin said he returned to his trial in another courtroom, and hours later a Johnson County sheriff’s deputy told him that the court reporter had filed a complaint. He said he expects a courtroom videotape to verify that “nothing happened of consequence.” |
