3 San Antonio officers wounded

Associated Press San Antonio police officer Lawrence Robarts is transferred to an AirLIFE helicopter Monday after being shot on the south side of San Antonio. SAN ANTONIO—Two San Antonio police officers were in stable condition Tuesday after being shot and wounded while trying to serve a domestic violence arrest warrant.

The incident happened just hours after another officer was shot in the leg in a separate incident.

On Monday evening, three officers went to a home to serve a warrant to a man accused of shooting at his wife Saturday. When the officers entered the home, the man opened fire, hitting a rookie police officer in the back and another officer in the lower leg and upper arm, police said.

Officers Brandy Roell, who graduated from the academy last month, and Lawrence Robarts, an eight-year veteran, both underwent surgery. San Antonio police said they were in stable condition Tuesday.

The standoff—which closed down the neighborhood—ended after several hours when police forced entry into the home and found the suspect dead. Andres Vargas, 43, had apparently shot himself, police said.

In the other shooting, an officer was hit in the leg while investigating a burglary. The officer shot at the two suspects, killing one and injuring the other, police said.

That officer, Jeremy Swindells, was treated and released, police said.
