Fort Worth newspaper selling historic building

FORT WORTH, Texas—The Fort Worth Star-Telegram plans to put its historic downtown office building up for sale as the newspaper continues to cut costs.

The Star-Telegram reported the move over the weekend, and it comes on the heels of the newspaper selling its four-story annex building, an adjacent parking lot and two other downtown parking lots Friday.

Gary Wortel, the Star-Telegram publisher, said that when the annex building went on the block, he received a couple of inquiries about the main building.

The newspaper, which has reduced staff through attrition and layoffs recently, is reassessing its needs. Wortel said the building is “bigger than we need” and may be too old to keep pace with rapidly changing industry technologies.

“We want to assess interest level,” he said. “If we’re going to move, we want to do it for the right reasons. We won’t move if it doesn’t reduce costs and meet our strategic objectives related to consolidating other facilities.”

If the building is sold, the newspaper would maintain a downtown office for reporters and sales representatives, Wortel said. Most employees would move to a new Star-Telegram property, he said.

The four-story building was built in 1920, then expanded in 1940 and 1947. The last major addition, built in 1967, was a four-story building north of the original building.
