Wal-Mart finishes Better Homes and Gardens launch

BENTONVILLE, Ark.—Wal-Mart Stores Inc. says it has completed its launch of Better Homes and Gardens brand products, placing them in stores nationwide as part of its update to products in its home section.

The world’s largest retailer said Tuesday it will carry products that are featured in the pages of the magazine.

Wal-Mart said more than 550 Better Homes and Gardens brand products are available in stores and on its Web site. The line fits into Wal-Mart’s new strategy of streamlining its offerings and price categories so customers can more easily find what they want.

The line was featured during the summer at Wal-Mart’s annual meeting as an example of its tiered pricing. Wal-Mart also has its store brand products in its merchandise mix. The strategy extends to apparel and other categories.

The agreement between Bentonville-based Wal-Mart and Better Homes and Gardens publisher Meredith Corp. was announced about a year ago. The deal was described Tuesday in a news release by the companies as “the largest extension of Better Homes and Gardens brand in its 86-year history.”

“Better Homes and Gardens is a trusted lifestyle brand that our core customer knows and loves,” said Linda Hefner, executive vice president and general manager of Wal-Mart’s home division. She said the Better Homes and Gardens products will complement its other home products.

The companies are planning to add more products—bedding, bath and outdoor and garden—by fall 2009.

Wal-Mart shares were up 78 cents at $59.67 in trading early Tuesday; Meredith shares were up 8 cents at $29.09.
