Publication points to cause with pink paper
LUBBOCK, Texas—The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal made a visible statement about the fight against breast cancer Wednesday, publishing on pink newsprint to mark the start of the month aimed at raising awareness of the disease.
Each of the 13 daily newspapers owned by Augusta, Ga.-based Morris Communications Company LLC will do something in October to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, said Julia Childs, a spokeswoman for the Avalanche-Journal’s marketing department. “It’s the same message,” Childs said. “They’re bringing breast cancer awareness to their communities.” Only the Lubbock paper printed an entire edition on pink newsprint, she said. The response from advertisers was strong, resulting in a larger-than-usual Wednesday paper that exhausted the supply of pink newsprint ordered several months ago. That meant some copies delivered to the city’s outskirts had to be printed on regular newsprint, Childs said.
