Arkansas police collect data on text messaging
JONESBORO, Ark.—Arkansas State Police have begun collecting data on traffic accidents related to text messaging to determine how much of a problem the practice is.
“At this point, the state police doesn’t have the data to give a formative answer,” state police spokesman Bill Sadler says. Police traffic accident reports now have a new information box for troopers to fill out while investigating a crash. When filled, it denotes the use of an electronic device while driving. Hillary Davidson says she wants state lawmakers to pass a law that specifically prohibits text messaging while a driver is behind the wheel. She plans to meet with state legislators to ask them to sponsor a bill. “I lost my dad because of text messaging,” said Davidson, 21, a senior at Arkansas State University. “I see people everywhere driving like maniacs, and they’re texting.” Davidson’s father, Paul Davidson, died July 14 after his vehicle was hit by another vehicle, driven by a man who told police he was sending a text message. Paul Davidson, 41, a father of three, was on his way home after doing some yard work for a friend. In September, 25 people were killed when a California Metrolink train crashed just moments after its engineer sent a text message. Hillary Davidson says her family is supposed to meet with prosecutors this week to discuss the crash that killed her father, and possible charges. |
