Arkansas Governor’s Mansion has cameo on ‘30 Rock’ episode

LITTLE ROCK—Steve Martin is not living at the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion—it just looks that way on TV.

A recent episode of the comedy series “30 Rock” saw stars Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin visit a character played by Martin in Connecticut. However, images of the supposedly agoraphobic multimillionaire’s mansion actually were shots of Arkansas’ ceremonial home for its governor.

Eric Van Der Werff, a photography director for NBC Universal Television Entertainment, said producers with “30 Rock” purchased the footage from stock images company Thought Equity for the show’s use.

“The use in the show was unintentional,” he said.

The images of the mansion, one from the side at night, the other from the front through its opening wrought-iron gates, appear to be from before a 1999 tornado swept through the Little Rock neighborhood where the mansion sits. The storm knocked over trees on the mansion’s grounds, including one that still held Chelsea Clinton’s girlhood treehouse.

Matt DeCample, a spokesman for Gov. Mike Beebe, said the governor learned about the mansion’s brief appearance in “30 Rock” from staffers.

“A few different people on staff saw them when the show aired and did double takes,” DeCample said.

Maxwell said the footage likely comes from the mansion’s previous television starring role—serving as a character’s home in the 1990s TV series “Designing Women.”
