5 ex-cheerleaders accept deal in hazing case

HOUSTON—Five former Houston-area high school varsity cheerleaders accused of hazing other cheerleaders agreed Monday to take part in a program similar to probation that could lead to the charges being dismissed.

The former Morton Ranch High School cheerleaders who accepted the one-year diversion program are Kelly Buffa, Kirsten Davis and Madison Tanner, all 17; and Hannah Cochran and Meigan Goff, both 18.

If they successfully comply with conditions in the agreement by December 2009, prosecutors would dismiss the criminal case, Harris County District Attorney Kenneth Magidson said in a news release. The agreements call for at least 60 hours of community service, letters of apology, obeying all laws, submitting to alcohol or drug testing and voluntarily testifying at any trials arising from the case.

Two other cheerleaders, Hayley Spincer Davis, 17, and Adelynn Frances Garner, 18, agreed earlier this month to complete the diversion program.

All seven Morton Ranch High teens were indicted last month on misdemeanor hazing charges after a police investigation at the Katy Independent School District in suburban Houston.

The ex-cheerleaders were accused of restraining several junior varsity cheerleaders, blindfolding them, binding their hands and pushing them into a swimming pool in an off-campus incident in July.

If convicted of the Class B misdemeanor charge, the teens face up to six months in jail and a fine of $2,000.
