Human remains to be tested to determine identity
LYFORD, Texas—South Texas authorities have sent human remains to be tested to determine whether they could be those of a 68-year-old Mission woman whose husband and stepson have been charged in her death, officials said.
Josefina Lugo has been missing since Aug. 23. Three days after her disappearance, Willacy County officials found an arm in a canal near Raymondville. A lab in Arizona said that DNA from the arm matched blood found in Lugo’s condominium. Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence said private landowners found a human skull and other bones on a piece of their land Saturday afternoon. The remains have been sent to Austin to see if there is a match with the arm. “There’s no confirmation or anything right now on whose they may be,” Spence told the San Antonio Express-News. The area where the bones were found had previously been under water, and when the area dried up it may have uncovered the remains, Spence said. He said it was unclear how long the remains had been in the area. “We’re pretty sure it drifted somewhat (and) it hadn’t been there like years or anything like that,” he said. “It looked like something that had just washed up on shore,” Spence told The (McAllen) Monitor. Lugo’s husband, Pedro Lugo, and stepson, Javier Lugo, were indicted on murder charges in September in connection with her disappearance. Javier Lugo also was charged with two counts of tampering with evidence. Those cases are still pending. Investigators planned to check missing persons reports and other possibilities, Spence said. Court records indicate Josefina Lugo had filed for divorce July 10. Lyford is located about 40 miles south of Brownsville. |
